So, who is coming? Just got the schedule from Alex, looks like we're going to be busy. I've been painting up some units and getting into the ACW vibe, not for the first time this year thanks to Tim H.

So far I know there's Peeler, EB, Richie, me...

I'm booked, and I think Norm is too. Looking forward to it!

I've tried to understand the flow of the battle a bit better by reading the Osprey campaign book, but am still as baffled as EB with a road atlas in his hands. However, so long as I get to roll some dice, I'm happy.

Dave

It was actually quite simple

Day 1, Federal cavalry skirmishing to slow down advancing confederate inf outside Gettysburg, probably the most interesting day of the battle. Feds retreat to Seminary Ridge overnight.

Day 2 Lee demonstrates, but his main goal is to envelop fed's left at the Round tops - FAIL.

Day 3, instead of withdrawing, for lack of any convincing plan, Lee sends Pickett across sloping open ground and loses a lot of men.

Not one of Lee's better battles and Meade deserves an honourable mention for unflappability.

Ta Griz, it'll be interesting to see how close to the historical events it stays. Reinforcements are arriving at their actual times, but I'm sure a bunch of gamers can seriously divert the course of history, if not through genius then through blunder!

Picketts Charge was probably the real world equivalent of 'last turn syndrome', where everything gets thrown into one last frontal assault before packing up time.

Yes, but in the real world they don't all get put into the same box for the trip home. I think Lee had got used to victory and had stopped considering it to be something you earned, he just turned up and tried things until the Union broke. Must have been a hell of a trip south thinking about the real world.

He did at least have the decency to confront the survivors and admit his responsibility.

Shows what happens when you put Martin Sheen in charge of the ANV. There was only one way that was going to turn out....

True, Robert Duvall would not have made the same mistake. But you are all being too hard on Marse Robert, he could not have anticipated cunning Henry Hunt's ghost train of reserve artillery or Hunt's masterful use of those guns, switching damaged batteries for fresh ones during the initial bombardment, and having his ammunition supply so close to hand. Meade was more fortunate in the quality of his sub commanders as well, with the exception of Dan Sickles on day two, Hancock was an absolute rock in the defence of Cemetery Ridge. I can't help feeling that from day two onwards Longstreet let Lee down, by failing to push harder on the right flank, rather than throwing a tantrum, and having his forces arrive at their jump off points much earlier than 16.00, he could have taken both the Round Tops and swept onto the Union rear. Lee did however attach far too much importance to the absence of Stuart, by no means was all the Confederate cavalry missing, two whole brigades were idly left behind guarding supply trains and the rear areas, when they could have been properly employed from the outset. But the battle could have been won on day one if Lee had kicked Dick Ewell up the backside and taken Culp's Hill, that was unforgiveable, but sadly Ewell was no Stonewall.

They will not control us,

Hear hear!

I'm not so sure that the round tops were ever going to be too easy to take, but less dicking around on day 1 and it could have been a case of Meade marching divided and fighting where Lee wanted him too. A pretty classic Lee masterpiece.

If Longstreet had got his troops there in good time Grizz, Big Round Top was undefended, in fact it wasn't defended at all, and Vincent's brigade might well not have been there, ony Warren and a handful of engineers. It was all in the timing.
