No, but just think you could have a new slogan:

Chaps,

I have conducted my in depth recon regarding venues. As previously mentioned there were three candidate premises.

1) The Crown Hotel.
2) The Framlingham Conservative Club.
3) The Village Hall.

Venue 3 cannot be used on a Sunday morning as it will be in use by the local "happy clappy" Baptist church group for their service, so that is ruled out.
Venue 2, the Con Club, whilst having the space needed, has few tables available, and despite being a reasonable cost, can not offer security for the room whilst we are not there. I am unwilling to trust the individual I spoke with to even care about security of our soldiers etc. I got the distinct impression that we were not particularly welcome either, so I have ruled this one out.
For now that only leaves venue 1, and it is the best of the bunch by a long way. The drawback is the cost. For hire of their space for the weekend it will cost us £300.00 in total. Yes it is a lot of money, but it will be secured when we are not there, that is guaranteed. It is a far more pleasant and hospitable venue, with bar and eating facilities on hand. there is a good sized space and tables in abundance. Plus if this does progress, some of you may well be staying there on site with your toy soldier goodies. I know that would put my mind at rest. I also think that if sufficient of us attend then the wargaming room cost per person will decrease exponentially.

The Crown also provided room costs for the weekend as follows:

The accommodation charges are listed below. However, if people are to book more than a one night’s stay we are happy to offer a 10% discount.

3 x feature double rooms: Fri & Sat £140 Sun £120

1 x feature twin room: Fri & Sat £140 Sun £120

2 x standard twin rooms: Fri & Sat £130 Sun £100

7 x standard double rooms: Fri & Sat £130 Sun £100

1 x single room: Fri & Sat £85 Sun £75

The rates above are based upon double occupancy (exc. the single room), for single occupancy you remove £10 from the price, bed and breakfast and are inclusive of VAT.

Again not the cheapest in the world, but the accommodation is excellent and the breakfasts are enormous and very good. The costs could be reduced by the 10% discount for staying more than one day and by people sharing, and they are on a per room basis as opposed to per person. As for other suitable B and B lodgings, there are not many in the local area, and would entail people driving to and from Framlingham. This way you will be staying on site and that would hopefully reduce the costs of the weekend.
Obviously this is dependant on a good attendance, but that is up to you guys, and is still open to discussion of course. I have one other possible venue to check out just in case, The Royal British Legion premises, but they are not that big. The Crown would be able to accommodate a good number of players.

Thats my report on things so far. I await your comments.

The rooms look ok, but there's a couple of campsites within easy cycling distance so I'd probably go for those.

Put me down as a definite.

Good work Tim, thanks for taking the time to do this. Count me in for sure too. It'll be birthday month so I'll be entitled to a treat and the Crown sounds spot on!

All sounds good to me, gaming room & bar in the same building, ideal innit :)

I've recently stayed at the Crown & happily recommend it.

Looks like a plan ! I think I may bring the family and look for a holiday cottage nearby, but as a venue for gaming the crown sounds excellent

Simon, there is a holiday cottage in town, literally 30 seconds walk from the Crown, I will get details of it asap, and I have been inside it is lovely and sleeps four at least.

John F, there is a caravan parking site just down the road from us, again I will source some details for you, it is next to a farm shop so supplies are on hand.

Andy, bring the Mrs. The town is grand and there will enough to keep her entertained, and the hotel is a real treat.

Ok next question chaps is, shall I go ahead and book the venue as it requires a £50.00 deposit. On the plus side it does give you all some time to prepare and save the pennies, a year in fact. It would be great to make a go of this even if it is just the Ayton regulars attending, I know we can guarantee a good time.

Yeah, go for the booking Tim. Looks like we've got enough for a decent start and hopefully others will get on board. Some new faces from among the forum members would be good too, and we've got a year to decide on games etc.

I have just spoken to Mrs CB. Who is in Manchester tonight and tomorrow with work. And is likely to be likewise this weekend next year... :(

It doesn't rule it out entirely but it makes the Sunday difficult. We shall have to see...

Where are my manners. I've been reading this with interest but it never occurred to me to comment.

Bloomin' well done Tim. Count me in. Happy to send something towards the deposit (PM me).

Now, how the heck do I get to Framlingham without a car?

I had counted you in already old chap. PM sent, but not begging for deposit money, which will be part of the final bill anyway. I'll secure that. Announcements to be made later this week re dates etc. It's the bloody game debate I'm not looking forward to. Of course that will depend on numbers to a great extent.

I'd say go ahead and book - looks like from the definitoes we could cover the cost (I'll just extend my paper round).

I was having some thoughts about games debate, do you want me to put some ideas up?
